Byron LeClair

Byron LeClair is the Director of Energy Project Development for the Pic River First Nation. With nearly 25 years of experience, Mr. LeClair serves as President of Pic River Energy, a holding company wholly owned by the Pic River First Nation which is developing new projects on behalf of the community. He also serves as President of the Kagiano Power Corporation (a wholly owned community energy project) and Vice President of Business Development for the Begetekong Power Corporation (a partnership between Pic River and Innergex Renewable Energy). A staunch advocate of Aboriginal rights, Byron LeClair has spoken at many conferences on topics related to Aboriginal people, resource development projects and the benefits of First Nation business partnerships. He has made many contributions to the development of provincial energy procurement policies, including Ontario's site release policy. He is a member of the Pic River community and has served previously as a Councillor for the First Nation. Pic River has two decades of experience in negotiating and executing commercial aboriginal/non-aboriginal partnerships in their many different energy projects. These partnerships include 3 operational hydro electric facilities - and six proposed new generating projects comprised of Wind and Water, representing 140 megawatts of new capacity costing nearly $500 million dollars of new investment. Most recently, Mr. LeClair has led the Pic River First Nation into new transmission development, forming a cooperative partnership between Pic River and 5 other regional First Nations who are partners in the East West Tie transmission project, a 230 kv transmission line between Wawa and Thunder Bay in northern Ontario, a project currently under development.
