Luis Fernando Perdigon

Managing Director & Head of Project Finance

Luis Fernando heads SMBC’s Project finance group for Latin America, a team of over 20 professionals in New York and Latin America with expertise in structuring and execution of complex transaction in power, infrastructure, petrochemicals, oil & gas and natural resources industries in countries like Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Panama, etc. He has close to 20 years of banking experience and a strong project and structured finance background. Also, he currently acts as board member of Financiera de Desarrollo Nacional – FDN, a Development Bank, majority-owned by the Colombian Government, where SMBC holds an 8.8% equity stake. Before his current position, he was in Colombia for 5 years, as Country Head for Colombia and responsible for the non-Japanese business in Colombia, Peru and Panama. He had joined SMBC’s project finance team in New York in December 2007 as Vice President focused and was involved in several project finance transactions, on the lending and advisory sides. Luis Fernando played a key role in transactions such as the US$3.8 billion financing for Ecopetrol’s expansion for Refineria de Cartagena; US$1.0 billion financing for AES´s Angamos power plant in Chile; US$85 million K-Sure insured loan for Savia in Peru; US$750 million financing for the acquisition of 5 power plants and a gas pipeline in Mexico by Mitsui & Co and Tokyo Gas; US$1.0 billion financing for the construction of Minera Esperanza copper mine in Chile; US$392 million financing for GDF Suez´s CTA coal-fired power plant in Chile, among others. In terms of Advisory mandates, Luis Fernando participated in important advisory assignments such as US$4.5 billion Etileno XXI petrochemical complex in Mexico, a US$3.8 billion gas pipeline in Peru and, currently, a US$500+ LNG regasification terminal in Colombia, TISUR $350M port expansion in Peru. Prior to joining SMBC, Luis Fernando worked with Standard Chartered Bank for 9 years, including 4 years as a Relationship Manager for Corporate Banking in Colombia and 5 years in the Project & Export Finance department in New York. He is bilingual in English and Spanish, holds a B.A. in Engineering from Universidad de los Andes (Colombia), a diploma in Corporate Finance and completed levels I and II of the CFA program .
