Carsten Wiebers, age 53,  heads KfW IPEX-Bank's Aviation & Rail department. The department finances predominantly Airbus and selected Boeing aircrafts for airlines and lessors globally and lends to public or private entities financing rail assets and projects as well as other transport vehicles. Products include project, corporate and export financing as well as public promotional finance schemes. Until recently Carsten Wiebers covered the bank's shipping, offshore and cruise activities as Global Head Maritime Industries since 2005 with a current total portfolio of about EUR 16 bln.  Since he joined the department in 1998, it expanded from what was an export financier of German built vessels to a global provider of maritime finance in all maritime subsectors supporting European exports as well as European vessel owners.  He entered the bank in 1992 as project manager for KfW's development aid finance, focusing on project finance in the former Soviet Union states of Central Asia and Pakistan. Sectors covered included airports and aviation, various producing industries as well as large and small scale irrigation projects. Previous to KfW he worked for several public and private institutions such as the Environmental Protection Agency in the US, the Word Bank and chemical industries with project assignments in the US, Africa and Asia. He holds a doctorate degree in agricultural economics having studied at the Technical University of Berlin, UC Davis and UC Berkeley. He is married and has three children.
