Mr. Henrique de Azevedo Avila is the Head of the Business Development for Africa Department of BNDES. The Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) is the main financing agent for development in Brazil. The Bank offers several financial support mechanisms to Brazilian companies, enabling investments in all economic sectors. He joined Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) as engineer in 1986 and developed a sound track record in the bank as executive in several divisions, holding different positions at the Credit Division, the Infrastructure Division and the Export Credit Division responsible for BNDES-exim’s credit lines. Prior to joining BNDES, Mr. Avila worked as information systems analyst at Bradesco Seguros. Since 2013 he has led a dedicated team that provides financial solutions that may facilitate trade between Brazil and Africa. In this regard, he has developed intense cooperation with financial institutions operating in that continent, at different levels: international agencies, export credit agencies, multilateral banks, regional development banks and commercial banks. The premise is to reconcile interests, combine forces, and march together, aiming at creating a network of foreign partners to support Brazilian exports and direct investments in the region. In connection with this, Mr. Avila is the BNDES representative at the Superior Council of the Brazilian Foreign Trade Foundation (FUNCEX), at the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil) Deliberative Council, and at the Global Network of Export-Import Banks and Development Finance Institutions (G-NEXID). With respect to his academic background, Mr. Avila received his Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering, a Master of Science degree in Transportation Engineering and a PhD in business administration from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He was awarded by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) with the 2013 best thesis in Business Administration among all universities in Brazil. He still holds an MBA in Finance and an MBA in International Business from IBMEC Business School Rio de Janeiro, and also has attended executive education programs at top graduate schools such as GWU and HKS, as well as advanced training courses at international organizations such as UNCTAD and NEXI.
