John is the Managing Partner of our Tokyo office and the head of our Projects, Energy and Infrastructure team in Tokyo. John is a projects specialist with 20 years’ experience advising project sponsors, ECAs/IFIs, commercial banks, private equity funds and commodity houses on the full range of development, joint venture, M&A and structured financing transactions in the energy, utilities and infrastructure sectors. John is ranked as a “Leading Individual” and described as “very experienced but also very approachable and very good in assisting the negotiation position and formulating strategy” in the Projects and Energy – Japan in the 2017 edition of the major legal directories including Chambers and Legal 500.
John’s highlight renewables experience includes advising:
> on the Oita Solar PV Project and another two solar projects in Japan
> the ECAs and commercial bank lenders on an Integrated Solar combined cycle project in the Middle East
> the lenders on an ongoing solar project in India
> a Japanese megabank on risk mitigation alternatives in the Japanese renewables market
> the lenders on a limited recourse solar financial securitisation transaction
> the international sponsors on their first solar investment projects in Japan
> Marubeni Corporation on its acquisition of a 49.9% interest in the Gunfleet Sands windfarm in the UK and NEXI covered financing
> the lenders on the c.£1bn Lincs offshore wind farm financing – the first offshore wind construction financing in the UK
> JBIC (and the commercial lenders) on the Kaliakra wind farm project in Bulgaria
> Mitsubishi Corporation on the Toul-Rosières PV solar acquisition in France
> First Reserve on two acquisitions of solar PV projects in Spain
His other power experience includes advising:
> the ECA/IFI and commercial bank lenders on a market-first IPP in sub-Sahara Africa
> JBIC/NEXI and commercial lenders in connection with multiple IWPPs (and bids) in the UAE including Mirfa IWPP, Rabigh 2 IWPP and Qurrayat IWP
> the sponsors on the Vung Ang II IPP in Vietnam
> Mitsui and Malakoff on a coal fired IPP in Pakistan
> the sponsors on the Simpang Belimbing IPP in Indonesia
> Mitsubishi Corporation on power asset acquisitions in Asia and Europe
> OneEnergy on its bid for the Senoko and Seraya IPPs in Singapore
> GDF SUEZ on its asset merger with International Power
Other recent experience includes advising the sponsors and project company on the c. $1bn ECA/IFI financing of a LNG receiving terminal in South East Asia, a short-listed Japanese and Korean consortium on all aspects of the integrated Bahrain LNG receiving terminal and FSU project, and the Sakhalin II LNG project.
