Robert J. Kokonis has 24 years of leadership experience in the broader aviation and travel sectors, acquired with major airlines such as Air Canada, Finnair and Royal Jordanian. Related senior postings saw Robert with travel management leader Carlson Wagonlit Travel, global distribution system Worldspan and travel technology pioneer CharterHub Inc. Robert is founder and Managing Director of AirTrav Inc., a respected Toronto firm that provides commercial, financial, fuel management, operational and regulatory guidance to airlines, airports, armed forces, governments, marine and roadhaul transports, and trade groups such as the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and National Airlines Council of Canada (NACC). Robert currently sits on the Advisory Board of a San Francisco travel technology firm and on the Advisory Board of EnvAerospace Inc., a Toronto firm that firm that has developed a proprietary engine nanocoating technology for improved fuel efficiency, decreased maintenance cost, and reduced carbon footprint. He regularly performs due diligence and research for private equity companies, banks and law firms on airline investments, restructurings and bankruptcies. In late 2009 Robert helped exit a fuel consulting firm to GE Aviation and its new Fuel & Carbon Solutions division. Robert’s airline consulting work has touched every continent and every airline type, such as major network, low cost, charter, regional and cargo, with clients ranging from start-up and re-launch to legacy/flag carrier. His airport work has also expanded the past several years, working with airport authorities and industry associations on traffic forecasts, carrier marketing, fuel supply chain, pricing models, non-aeronautical revenue strategies, and capital expenditure funding. Robert works at a senior executive level, guiding Managing Directors, Chief Financial Officers, Treasurers, Chief Operating Officers, Chief Commercial Officers, and Board Audit Committees at airlines worldwide. He has also worked with airline labour associations such as the Air Canada Pilots Association on complex labour negotiation matters. Over the past eight years Mr. Kokonis pioneered new fuel management practices and commercial evaluations for airlines and IATA members, covering hedging reviews, strategic fuel procurement, and supply chain optimization. A hallmark of Robert’s career has been his corporate-entrepreneurial mix. He launched AirTrav for example in support of an airline start-up plan that, until the events of 9-11, had progressed to an investment road show. He also helped start a company that introduced western business leaders to the emerging market powerhouses of China and India. An acknowledged airline authority, Robert is the primary airline and aerospace analyst for Canada’s 24-hour Business News Network (BNN). His comments are also frequently solicited by other A-list media including BBC World News, Financial Post, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and Thomson Reuters. Robert regularly addresses influential gatherings such as the Canadian Airline Investment Conference and the Aircraft Commerce FlyOps Conference. He also lectures globally on airline topics such as airline fuel hedging and airline finance to the Airfinance Journal New York School of Aviation Finance, to IATA’s Training & Development Institute, and to a new Singapore conference on risk management. Robert has provided expert testimony and research to government bodies such as Transport Canada and the Canadian Transportation Agency, to Canada’s Competition Bureau regarding several airline sector matters, to Eurocontrol, and to several law firms on aviation-related litigation. Robert holds an International M.B.A. (Honors Finance) from the Helsinki School of Economics in Helsinki, Finland and a B.A. from The University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada.
