Event Overview

The industry leading conference for insurance and reinsurance professionals in Latin America

Develop new business relationships and discover opportunities at the premium event for the Latin America insurance and reinsurance industry.

Meet with leading insurers, reinsurers, brokers, law firms, and loss adjustors in Miami, for two days of networking and expert speaker sessions.

Key themes in 2017 included:

  1. Insurance and reinsurance business continues to outperform other Latin American business sectors, as well as the overall growth rate for the region’s economies, which are on the whole struggling with recession. This is partly explained by re/insurance’s low penetration rate – and hence still great opportunities for growth within the region.

  2. Latin America’s insurance penetration rate is still struggling. Governments and ordinary people still shoulder too much of the risk when catastrophe strikes. Businesses are also under-insured, still to some degree seeing insurance buying as a luxury rather than a necessity. However, there is agreement that through better distribution, product design, initiatives such as micro-insurance, and the role of reinsurance in underpinning sustainable economic growth, insurance can and should play a greater role.

  3. The re/insurance industry is open to improving innovation efforts and the distribution and design of its products, seen as a way to create new revenue as well as improve penetration and thereby reduce Latin America’s protection gap.

  4. Regulatory and protectionist barriers persist. A recent global trend towards political populism and protectionism is no stranger within Latin America, which has a long history of protectionist rules and populist regimes. However, speakers noted the progress already made in Brazil, which has gone some way to liberalising its reinsurance rules since the Millennium, while noting that there is a long way to go, and a real risk of retrenchment or reversal towards protectionism. Regulators need to play their part in allowing the industry to offer its solutions to a broader audience and to facilitate a strong re/insurance sector in fulfilling its societal role of underpinning sustainable economic growth.
