Hiren has been involved in most aspects of banking business over 35 years. He joined State Bank of India in Calcutta as Management Trainee after finishing University with First Class Masters Degree in Economics. A fluent German speaker, he moved with the Bank to Frankfurt Germany as Relationship Manager and then on to Continental Illinois Bank in Frankfurt which was followed by a long stint of 17 years at Citibank London where Hiren has covered Central Eastern Europe Middle East and Africa for Citibank Syndications from 1993-1999. In 1997, Citibank won the Best Emerging Markets Syndications Bank of the year (inaugural). After joining Standard Chartered Bank in 2001, he was responsible for lead arranging several large syndicated loans across Africa, India and Turkey. Several local currency syndications also followed. Under his leadership, Standard Chartered has led the world’s largest soft commodity deal, Ghana Cocoa Board, for 6 times in the past 7 years and Sonangol for over 10 times in past 13 years. SCB also led large acquisition deals for Indian corporates in Europe ( TATA/Corus) and Africa (Bharti’s acquisition of Zain) and consistently remained with top bracket of Turkish Loan syndicating Banks. In 2016, he moved on to run Global Finance & Capital Limited, an investment banking boutique with Funds Management, in London with key focus on Africa and Southern Europe He is also co author of Syndicated Lending in Emerging Markets, a Euromoney publication.
